Manteca stings Yellowjackets

Manteca held off a late surge by visiting Hilmar on Thursday and defeated the Yellowjackets 20-14 in non-league football action at Guss Schmiedt Field. 

 Hilmar closed a 20-0 gap to 20-14 with two second-half scores and was driving late in the game when Jorge Cedano knocked down a fourth-down pass.

 Cedano got the Buffaloes on the board with a 16-yard pass to J’Bari Wilson late in the first quarter and he added his second scoring pass when he connected with Kyle Lynch from 46 yards out in the second period. Midway through the third quarter Chris Ortiz reeled off a 38-yard run for a score to put Manteca up 20-0.  

 A.J. Martinez ground out 74 yards on 18 carries for the Buffaloes and Wilson had 90 yards on 11 carries. 

 Tyler Brintley had eight tackles for Manteca, Nick Creighton seven and Michael Madrid six. Madrid added two interceptions and Austin Kivilahti a fumble recovery.


East Union 49, Gregori-Modesto 15

 Dezmin Ware set the tone for the game when he reversed his field and returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for the first of his four long touchdowns at Dino Cunial Field. 

Ware added an 80-yard punt return and 55- and 63-yard runs for touchdowns. Anthony Contreras scored on a 10-yard run set up by Andrew Mount’s fumble recovery and Tealen Gaines scored on a 30-yard run set up by Alex Alexander’s 35-yard kickoff return.

JoJo Espinosa had a 30-yard touchdown run called back only to turn around on the next play and hit Marquise Higgins for with a 30-yard touchdown pass. 

Mount, Alex Alexander, Warren McGorern and JoJo Espinosa played well on defense. The offensive line of Anthony Anaya, Gaberal Herrera, Thomas Cann, Jose Alaniz, Spencer Oberman, and Austin Driscoll opened huge holes all night.
