SAN ANDREAS — Weston Ranch High was outnumbered, outmatched and ultimately outmuscled in its 34-7 season-opening loss to Calaveras Friday.

The perennial powerhouse of the Mother Lode League, led by standout running back Monti Wilson, sent waves of players at the Cougars and shot ahead to a comfortable 28-0 halftime lead.

“They were bringing in different guys and we didn’t have a lot to rotate,” Weston Ranch coach Mike Hale said. “With us having a lack of depth at all positions, we our conditioning level became an issue and we basically got overpowered.

“Their ground game just kind of wore us down. We came out and fought, but not having the numbers each game is going to be a battle.”

Weston Ranch did not score until its final drive of the contest, with quarterback Antion Robinson hitting Embry Allen (five receptions, 63 yards) for a 28-yard touchdown.

Tremain Buntan had 10 rushes for 63 yards for the Cougars.
