RIPON — The Ripon High football cheerleaders are going to be sore this morning.
Following every Indians touchdown, their cheerleaders kick out the number of points on the Ripon side of the scoreboard.
After Ripon scored on Brandon Rainer’s 35-yard fumble recovery with a running-clock 50 seconds remaining to make the final score 74-0 over Riverbank, those 74 kicks brought the total for the evening to 442 kicks at Stouffer Field in Trans-Valley League action.
While the Bruins (0-2 TVL, 2-4 overall) suited up just 14 players, the Indians (2-0, 6-0) did not fare much better with only 21 which limited just how deep Ripon could go with substituting.
“We tried,” Indians coach Chris Musseman said. “We have people in positions they haven’t played trying to slow it down. I can’t ask my kids not to play hard. I won’t do that.
“We came out ready to play. It’s hard to get prepared for a game like this.”
Starting Ripon quarterback Ryan Daggett directed the offense for less than a half and was 3 for 3 for 41 yards passing with a 40-yard touchdown run to start the scoring deluge, and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Troy Brogan later in the first quarter that ended with the Indians leading 40-0.
“We just wanted to come out and get up from the start,” Daggett said. “We came out ready to play.”
Derric Roy was named homecoming king and rose to the occasion, leading all rushers with 93 yards on five carries — all in the first half — and touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards.
“It was amazing,” Roy said. “There were some great blockers out there.
“This is just a fantastic fielding. We are going to keep working.”
Roland Davis also scored twice for Ripon on a pair of 4-yard first-quarter runs. Ripon’s other two offensive touchdowns came on third-quarter runs of 48 yards by Jerry Nix (seven carries, 58 yards) and 31 yards by Adam Wood.
The Indians defense — which limited Riverbank to negative 69 yards — added two more defensive scores with a 5-yard fumble return by Grant Wiebe and a 25-yard interception by Gregory Clark. Caleb Delgado had a fumble recovery and Wood an interception for a total of five turnovers by the Bruins.
