ROUNDUP: Ripon Christian crushes Calaveras, Lathrop dominates Battle of I-5

Ripon Christian’s football team forced five turnovers Friday against Calaveras and recorded a second-straight shutout in the lopsided 42-0 victory.

Amos Cady came up with three of those turnovers, returning two for touchdowns — a 25-yard pick six in the middle of the second quarter, and a 62-yard run-back after a fumble recovery in the third. The sophomore defensive back had another interception.

Linebackers Logan DeJong (two sacks) and Preston Zuidervaart led the defense with 10 tackles apiece. Elias Ochoa and Trevor Van Elderen each picked off a pass.

Flyback Brady Grondz spearheaded the attack with 74 yards rushing and 48 receiving on eight total touches, scoring once. Grant Sonke added two short-yardage touchdowns, and Van Elderen had one.

Tight end Jace Beidleman contributed a 51-yard reception and a two-point conversion. Mason Tameling completed five passes for 103 yards.

Calaveras was held to 122 yards (eight passing).

 

Lathrop 50, Weston Ranch 7

Running back Julio Garcia accounted for Lathrop’s first four touchdowns, as the Spartans (1-2) took back the Battle of I-5 trophy from their rival.

Jimari Dove (five rushes, 42 yards) and Pablo Pena (seven rushes, 51 yards) each chipped in a touchdown run. Teagan Shevlin added a 16-yard TD toss to Adrian Padilla.

Garcia finished with 112 yards on 13 carries. Lathrop outgained the Cougars (1-2), 360-148.
