Second-half turnovers doom Manteca JV against Central Catholic

 Trailing by just a touchdown at halftime Friday, Manteca gave up three scores on turnovers in the second half to visiting Central Catholic, which ran away with a 42-0 Valley Oak League junior varsity football victory at Guss Schmiedt Field.

The Raiders (2-0 VOL, 3-1 overall) had three conventional touchdowns on runs of 4, 21 and 25 turns and trumped those with two fumble returns and one interception return for touchdowns.

Roman Duvernay (13 carries, 48 yards) pace the offense for the Buffaloes (0-1, 3-1-1) with contributions from Jeremiah Orona and William Brown.

Manteca’s Luke Avila led the defense with nine tackles. Valentino Torres added five stops, JuJu Ramirez four and Julian Ramirez three.


Grace Davis 15, Lathrop 12

Host Grace Davis (1-1, 1-4 overall) scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to come from behind for the Western Athletic Conference win at Downey High.

Keonie Green (six carries, 53 yards) scored a touchdown for Lathrop (0-2, 0-5). Reyes Guerrero paced the Lathrop attack, with 97 yards on seven carries, Ekem Sohal added 8 yards on nine carries, and Jayden White chipped in 46 yards on nine carries.

Lathrop’s Jayden White made five tackles, Avner Faaaliga and Chris Sirfelix-Barney four each and three for Aiden Remonidia.


Ripon Christian 21, Hughson 6

Josiah Van Vliet ran for one touchdown and threw for another to pace the Indians (1-1 Trans-Valley League, 4-1 overall) to a home league victory.

Van Vliet (8 of 13 passing, 109 yards) ran in a score form 1 yard out and completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Talen Tameling (six carries, 34 yards). Jax Booth (12 carries, 56 yards; two receptions, 12 yards) added an 11-yard scoring run. Noah DeBruyn added 48 yards on six carries and Stadtler Postma made two receptions for 43 yards.  

Jack DeJong made eight tackles for the Knights, Matt Trejos six, Josiah Van Vliet five, Jeremy Molloy three with Myles Pollard also contributing on defense.

Alexis Rosales hit Noah Bradley with a 35-yard second-quarter touchdown pass for the Huskies (0-2, 1-4).


Freshman

Lathrop 7, Grace Davis 0

Lathrop (2-0, 3-2) used a 92-yard, fourth-quarter drive capped with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Santos who sealed the WAC contest on Thursday with a 45-yard interception return in the fourth period at Bennie Gatto Field.

Didier Lofaro paced the 185-yard Lathrop rushing attack with 82 yards on four carries. Jaylen Santos ground out 60 yards on 14 carries.

Lathrop’s Joshua Talalele made five tackles and pressured the quarterback for Grace Davis (0-2, 0-3) twice. Dario Joseph and Eshan Clair added three tackles each, while C.J. Rudd contributed on defense.


East Union 33, Patterson 12

The Lancers (2-0, 4-1) scored 21 first-period points in the VOL road win at Tigers Stadium.

Before turning the game over to Max Abrew, Jacob Ramirez started the East Union scoring parade with a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown. Abrew (10 for 20 passing, 166 yards) ran in a 3-yard score and threw touchdown passes of 67 yards to Gunnar Fay (two receptions, 91 yards) and 46 yards to Caden Miller (four receptions, 64 yards). Adrian Sena tallied 100 yards on 11 carries.

Nathan Bettencourt made 10 tackles for the Lancers, and Darrion Brown nine.

The Tigers (1-4, 0-2) scored their touchdowns in the first and fourth periods.


Central Catholic 28, Manteca 6

The Raiders (2-0, 4-1) scored 14 first-quarter points and the Buffaloes (0-1, 3-2) never recovered.

Brody Carabello (nine carries, 89 yards; 4 of 6 passing, 43 yards) scored the lone Manteca touchdown on a 2-yard run. Brixton Menchaca-Ortiz added 25 yards on four carries, Josiah Moreno made three receptions for 33 yards and Jesse Garibay contributed to the Buffaloes offense.

Menchaca-Ortiz –led the Manteca offense with tackles. Camden Rodgers added eight stops, Alex Espinoza five with four each for Josiah Moreno and Garibay.
