Sierra High’s football team only has to look within when it comes to extending its season beyond the final week of VOL play. - photo by Bulletin file photo

FAST FACTS

The Sierra High administration will be charging an additional $1.00 for the Homecoming game this Friday night against the Sonora Wildcats at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

As a guy who feels it’s more important to finish a season with a 3.0 GPA than it is to finish a season 13-0, it’s hard to imagine a high school football game being a must-win contest, but that is exactly what the Sierra Timberwolves have waiting on them Friday night when Sonora High comes to town.

Make no mistake about it; the Wildcats are coming to Manteca to take on the defending Valley Oak League co-champions. Although Sierra sits in the middle of the pack in the VOL standings, they can assert themselves as a contender with a win over Sonora.

Sonora is currently 3-1 in the VOL, while both Sierra and East Union are 2-2. A victory would link Sierra with Sonora at 3-2 and depending on the Lancers’ outcome with Kimball, all three teams could be tied. Therefore, winning this football game is not an option for the Timberwolves – it’s a must.

Depending on what Timberwolves team shows up to Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium, I’d say their chances are pretty good. I’d love to see the Timberwolves from the first-half of the Enochs game, or the Sierra that swiped East Union’s heart in a little under 60-seconds.

But any special guest appearances from the Sierra squad that gave up a 10-minute drive to Oakdale, or 21 unanswered to Enochs and the Timberwolves could blow their shot. With the aspirations that I know this club opened the season with, I’m pretty sure they’d call their next three games “must win’s”.

The Wildcats will obviously be gripping after what will likely be a loss of services for teammates who got caught up in some co-curricular activities (safe to assume that getting arrested will violate the “unsatisfactory citizenship clause” in the athletic code). The significance of the players’ input on the field will be voided, yet the messiness of the ordeal has proven to motivate a team or two in the past, so Sonora showing up dazed and confused is hardly likely.

They will be coming in hungry, and driving past Manteca High to get to Sierra probably won’t help the Timberwolves’ cause. Manteca thumped the Wildcats 42-13 a week ago, so the chances of Sonora forgetting are slim. Sonora will need to get back on track and leaving Manteca 4-1 in the VOL is the only navigation tool.

It all rests on the Timberwolves and they are more than capable. Putting together a solid four quarters of football should put this group in position to finish out the VOL season on a four-game tear, and land themselves back in the postseason for the third consecutive season – but it starts with Friday’s must-win.
