It seemed like it would take forever for Lathrop High to record the first football victory, but it surely didn’t take long this season, as the Spartans rolled up to Sacramento and came home with a 28-21 victory over McClatchy High Saturday for the first win in Lathrop history.

The Spartans (1-1) grabbed their first victory with flare, scoring in the game’s final minutes to secure the first win in head coach Jessie Rodriguez tenure at Lathrop High.

Lathrop’s Elijah Cash hit Brandon McLaurin on a 49-yard touchdown strike with a little over one minute remaining in the game. McLaurin’s touchdown pushed the Spartans back in front and Christian Pena’s 2-point conversion run sealed the deal in the Spartan victory.

Dennis Johnson put Lathrop on the board first, when he broke off an 8-yard touchdown run. Pena got in on the action following Johnson, breaking a 17-yarder for a score.

Pena was the workhorse for Lathrop, pounding out 152 yards on 23 carries. Andrew Aquino also broke the century mark, totaling 123 yards on just 18 carries. Aquino also found the end zone with a 42-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Lathrop will try and continue its new trend when they host Highlands High Friday 7:30 p.m.
