The Manteca freshman football team found out no lead is safe Thursday in a 30-21 loss to Tracy in non-league action at Guss Schmiedt Field.

Thanks to Michael Gonzalez touchdown runs of 2 and 40 yards and a 40-yard touchdown scamper by Matt Wilkerson (12 carries, 123 yards), the Buffaloes took a 21-0 second-quarter lead. Gonzalez finished with 13 carries for 129 yards.

“We came out and scored three quick touchdowns in the first two quarters and put our opponent in a hole early,” Manteca coach Jon Shaefer said. “That’s unusually a huge tactical advantage, but not this time.”

Following a Buffaloes fumble late in the third quarter the Bulldogs took a 22-21 lead in the fourth period on a 20-yard touchdown run by Eric Hawkins capped by Josh Brakkee’s conversion run. Tracy added another touchdown and two-point conversion with 2:04 remaining in the game to secure the victory.

 Tokay 14, Weston Ranch 6
Time ran out on the Cougars when after driving 50 yards to the Tigers’ 15-yard line Thursday they were unable to get another play off before the final buzzer sounded in non-league action.

“It was a hard-fought game that came down to the final play,” Weston Ranch Nathan Moore said. “We played well and never gave up.”

The Cougars made three trips inside the Tokay 10 and came away empty each time. Chris Cliatt scored the lone Weston Ranch touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Juliese Batieste (fumble recovery) gained 62 yards for the Cougars and Anthony Bench gained 63.

Lodi 14, East Union 0
Although the Lancers gained 118 yards to just 48 for the Flames, Lodi’s special teams came up with the big plays when they needed to.

A 72-yard kickoff return to start the game and a 42-yard punt return in the third quarter led to the two Flames touchdowns.

“We gave them two opportunities and they took full advantage and scored both times,” East Union coach Ron Clayton said.

Lancers quarterback Joe Menzel was 6 of 10 for 54 yards before being forced to leave the game late in the first half following a late hit.
