The Weston Ranch Cougars were able to do something the squad hasn’t done since 2005, edging out Franklin in double-overtime for a 28- 26 win.

The Cougars have not won a season opener since the 2005, when the team last made the playoffs. With the game tied 12-12 after regulation Weston Ranch got a touchdown pass from James Simerley to Ed Melero in the first overtime period and a 3-yard scoring run from Candolario Elizando in the second overtime.

The Cougars were able to convert on both point-after attempts, securing the victory with a two-point pass on the first score and a run from Simerley on the second. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Franklin in the second overtime pushed the Yellowjackets back 15 yards for over celebrating their overtime touchdown.

Weston Ranch got quality efforts from both Simerley and Joseph Gonzales (18 carries, 97 yards) who combined for 150 yards rushing. John McDonald also made significant contributions, rushing for 84 yards on just nine carries.

Franklin was able to produce 200 yards through the air, but Weston Ranch’s defense’s lone lapse (Franklin scored on second play from scrimmage) was the group’s only mishaps until a late fourth quarter score from Franklin.
