“It was clear later in the second half that we were the better-conditioned team and we started to roll. At that point we were pretty much able to do whatever we wanted.”

ELK GROVE — The Timberwolves were moving down the field late in the game but the host Cardinals (2-0) made an interception to secure the win in non-league action.
“In the first half we played pretty well,” Sierra coach Jeff Harbison said. “But in the second half we didn’t execute very well offensively or defensively.
“We had a number of missed tackles and missed offensive opportunities. You can’t do that and beat a good football team.”
The Timberwolves (1-2) led 26-14 at halftime behind two Anthony Cota touchdowns of 12 and 55 yards, a 9-yard Jayson Manuta scoring run and a 41-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Perea to Zach Penirian. Cota finished with 23 carries for 169 yards.
Sierra’s only touchdown in the second half was on a fourth down in the final period with a 14-yard pass from Penirian to Manuta. Guillermo Nunez made an interception for the Timberwolves.
