LODI — Kenny Williams made four interceptions for Weston Ranch — three in the second half – to help lead the visiting Cougars to a 41-25 win over Tokay at the Grape Bowl.

“We were a little shaky in the first half but we were able to keep it tight,” Weston Ranch coach Mike Hale said. “We got the ball back to start the second half and we scored.

“It was clear later in the second half that we were the better-conditioned team and we started to roll. At that point we were pretty much able to do whatever we wanted.”

The Tigers (1-2) led 25-20 entering the fourth quarter when the punishing ground game of the Cougars (1-1) took over. Alex Esan gave Weston Ranch put the Cougars ahead 27-25 with 6:57 left in the game and Tremain Buntan added scoring run of 5 and 6 yards to put the game away for the Cougars.

Buntan finished with 13 carries for 100 yards and teammate Donnell Sims had 35 yards on 11 carries, most of which came in the fourth quarter.

James Simerly threw three touchdown passes for Weston Ranch – two in the second quarter to Oshari Dunn of 17 and 21 yards and one to Kenny Williams of 37 yards that gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead.

Simerly completed seven of nine passes for 114 yards and no interceptions, and the Cougars racked up 310 offensive yards.

ELK GROVE — The Timberwolves were moving down the field late in the game but the host Cardinals (2-0) made an interception to secure the win in non-league action.

“In the first half we played pretty well,” Sierra coach Jeff Harbison said. “But in the second half we didn’t execute very well offensively or defensively.

“We had a number of missed tackles and missed offensive opportunities. You can’t do that and beat a good football team.”

The Timberwolves (1-2) led 26-14 at halftime behind two Anthony Cota touchdowns of 12 and 55 yards, a 9-yard Jayson Manuta scoring run and a 41-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Perea to Zach Penirian. Cota finished with 23 carries for 169 yards.

Sierra’s only touchdown in the second half was on a fourth down in the final period with a 14-yard pass from Penirian to Manuta. Guillermo Nunez made an interception for the Timberwolves.
