Jose Acosta and the rest of the Sierra High boys soccer team continued their early-season tear with a 7-0 drubbing of visiting Edison Thursday.
Acosta scored the final two goals in the 67th and 77th minutes, running his season total to nine through three non-league matches. In the Timberwolves’ opener last Friday he tallied five goals. Also worth noting: his freshman brother, Juan, assisted his first score in Thursday’s contest.
Erick Noriega and Amir Guedoir also netted two goals apiece, while Niko Gonzalez scored once and assisted another. Sierra led by three by the midway point of the first half. Goalies Jason Angelo and David Victor combined for the shutout.
Now 3-0, the Timberwolves have some momentum going into their own annual tournament that kicks off with a rivalry match with East Union at 8 a.m. Saturday. Sierra has outscored its non-league opponents 20-3, but coach Jose Montes said he does not want his team to fall into a false sense of security.
“The scores look good, but we’re not jelling yet,” he said. “We still have to work on possession of the ball and transitioning from defense to offense. The big test is going to be in two days.”
Franklin 4, Weston Ranch 0
At Franklin, the host Yellowjackets (2-0) held a 1-0 halftime lead before Weston Ranch’s starters were pulled to rest their legs for today’s 4th Annual Buff Cup tournament.
Weston Ranch (0-2) will play three games the next two days, capping a busy week in which it five scheduled. The Cougars have taken second at the Buff Cup three straight years.
“My starters played really well, and a couple guys from the bench stepped it up today,” Weston Ranch coach Carlos Gaspar said.
