The Ripon and Ripon Christian football teams may have another Friday night off in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
The Divisions I-VI semifinals may be postponed because of poor air quality caused by the devastating Camp Fire blaze that has wiped out the town of Paradise. The SJS will announce its decision today at about noon.
The section’s cross country championships, held annually at Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom, has already been pushed back a week. Will DeBoard, Assistant Commissioner of the SJS, said in an email that the section will decide later in the week if the meet will go on.
While smoke from Camp Fire continues to hover above the Bay Area and Central Valley, the Woosley Fire is affecting communities in Southern California.
The California Interscholastic Federation announced Tuesday that the regional and state championship football bowl games have been moved back a week. NorCal contests will take place Dec. 7-8, and the state finals on Dec. 14-15.
The NorCal water polo championships was pushed to Friday and Saturday. All other CIF events will remain as scheduled, including the cross country meet set for Nov. 24.
“We reviewed the schedules with the 10 CIF Sections and came to a unanimous agreement that the best course of action is to cause as least disruption as possible for all those participating in our Regional and State Championship events,” CIF Executive Director Roger L. Blake said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during a time where schedules need to be fluid due to unfortunate events beyond our control.”
Ripon (10-1), seeded second in the SJS Division V playoffs, is scheduled to host No. 3 Bear River (10-1), while Ripon Christian (11-0) is pitted with Division VI top seed Modesto Christian (10-1). All four teams started the postseason with first-round byes.
