STOCKTON — A one-point game after one quarter Thursday quickly got away from Weston Ranch, as visiting Antioch started to pull away in the second period and never let up in a 56-32 non-league girls basketball game.

The Panthers (5-5) had just six players in uniform and were outscored 5-1 to start the game. They came back to lead 8-7 going into the second quarter and never looked back. 

“We’re low in numbers this year and we have a few injured right now,” Antioch coach Dorvez Barnett said. “We were able to get a couple of buckets up on them and then start to pull away.

“It’s about consistency. We weren’t finishing in the beginning and that really hurt us and those are the things we are trying to shore up, along with fundamentals and rebounding. Luckily, the ball bounced our way today.”

The Panthers pulled in 51 rebounds to 31 for the Cougars (2-7). 

“The point of emphasis today was to rebound the basketball,” Barnett said. “We lost two games previously because we gave up a lot of second-chance points. 

“Today, we did a much better job of limiting their offense to one shot at the basket.”

In addition to getting pummeled on the glass, Weston Ranch committed 25 turnovers.

“Rebounds killed us,” Cougars coach Darrell Johnson said. “That and turnovers. We would get three or four turnovers in a row. And we did not play defense at all. Every time they shot they had their own way. We literally never boxed out.

“We looked like a young team. We looked like a team that has a lot of sophomores playing. And for the first time on a team that I have coached I think we were intimidated by the size of the other team.”

Sophomore Mia Boston (four assists, three rebounds) led Weston Ranch with 10 points and sophomore Damaysha Huff (five points) tallied 12 rebounds and four blocks. Justice Stitt chipped in seven points, five rebounds and a steal.  

Shadae Williams and Ajala King paced Antioch with 16 points apiece.

Kaila Comerie and Dearri Ross nearly outscored the Panthers by themselves with Comerie scoring 13 points and Ross 10.
