The setters of the top teams in the Trans Valley and Southern leagues were voted the Most Valuable Players of each conference.
Cal State Monterey-bound Kelsey Johnston earned the honor outright in the TVL after leading Ripon High to its fifth straight championship. She led the team with 140 service aces and 1,157 assists.
Last year, she shared top billing with former Escalon standout Kaitlyn Brayton. Johnston was also selected to the all-TVL team her sophomore year.
In the Southern League, Ripon Christian senior Michelle Terpstra, heading to NCAA Division-II Northwest Nazarene University, was tabbed the top player. She made all-TVL last year.
Ripon Christian (28-7) went undefeated in its first year back in the SL for its first conference crown since sharing the TVL title in 1996. Head coach Tiger Shelton earned Coach of the Year.
The Knights’ season was on the brink of coming to an end Tuesday in the first round of the CIF State Northern California Championships before upending Santa Catalina of Monterey with a wild five-game comeback (21-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 15-6). Ripon Christian claimed its 14th Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title last week.
Ripon (35-7), after capturing its first SJS championship in 27 years, was the top seed in the NorCal Division-IV bracket but lost to No. 8 St. Helena in heartbreaking fashion (23-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 9-15) on Tuesday.
Along with Johnston, outside hitter Cheyann DePrue (5.8 kills/game, 3.3 digs/game) middle blocker Coryn Hernandez (3.4 kills/gameand libero Paulina Ceja (4.5 digs/game) — all seniors — were the cornerstones of Ripon’s 2010 success.
They were each named to the all-TVL team, and DePrue made the list for a second straight season. Sophomore defensive specialist Paige Burrell (2.4 digs/game, 92 aces) rounds out Ripon’s all-leaguers, while Nicole Kaiser, also a sophomore back-row player, earned honorable mention.
All-league honorees for Ripon Christian are senior middle blocker Emily Leahy and freshman outside hitter Andie Shelton. Libero Brittany Petlansky and outside hitter Morgan Alger earned honorable mention.
