ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jenna Campbell, East Union soccer
Bulletin sports 2020-21

The freshman attacking midfielder picked a good time to notch the first brace of her high school career.

On May 24, she accounted for both of the Lancers’ goals in a 2-1 season-ending upset of rival Manteca, the reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion. East Union snapped a four-game losing streak against the Buffaloes and finished third in the Valley Oak League for the pandemic-shortened season with an 8-3 record (9-3 overall).

“Jenna had an outstanding game,” first-year East Union head coach Jason Silva said. “She’s a great midfielder that’s consistent and very dependable with her play. She will give you a solid game every time she steps on the field.”

Campbell put East Union ahead with each goal, one coming in the opening minutes and the other within minutes of the final whistle. Fellow freshmen Tallon Cervantez and Olivia Morgan each contributed an assist. Cervantez set up the first with a corner kick, and Morgan delivered a long throw-in that Campbell volleyed with a clever flick to near post.

“To see that last flick go in from Olivia’s throw-in was an awesome finish to the season,” Silva said.

Campbell finished her rookie varsity season with seven goals and three assists.
