ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Taimane Lowery, Lathrop cross country
Bulletin sports 2020-21

The Spartans' second-year standout has built off her promising freshman campaign.

Lowery finished strong the past two weeks. On March 12 at Patterson High, she won the Western Athletic Conference North Division meet, helping Lathrop to a first-place finish as a team.

On Tuesday, they competed in the WAC Championships held at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres. Lowery won her heat in 21 minutes, 32.84 seconds and was the overall runner-up to Los Banos' Aryanna Sandoval (21:25.57), who is a three-time league titlist.

Lowery was one of three Spartans to earn all-league patches. Following her were Veronica Rodriguez and Lorelai Kremerskotter, who took fourth and sixth, respectively. Lathrop ended up second as a team behind Los Banos.

“(Lowery) started running cross country last year to condition for basketball,” Lathrop coach Ann Elam said. “She then realized she had a talent for running and a gift. She was my top runner last year and continues to be this year as well. I look forward to see her excel in the next couple of years. She's a wonderful young lady with a lot of passion and desire to succeed.”
