ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Will Gilbert, Ripon Christian baseball/basketball
Bulletin sports 2020-21

The senior standout is helping small-school Ripon Christian show well in the competitive Valley Oak League this spring season, doing it in two sports.

He started the week of May 17 on the baseball diamond. On May 18, Gilbert pitched a six-inning, four-hit shutout of Escalon as the Knights won, 10-0. He struck out four and walked four and also hit 2 for 4 with a triple and a run.

Two days later, Ripon Christian completed the sweep, 16-8. Gilbert went 1 for 5 with two runs, two steals and an RBI. Then he rushed to East Union to aid the Knights hoops team in warding off the Lancers, 68-61. The 6-foot-3 guard had just four points but made up for it on Friday, May 21 when East Union visited RC for the rematch.

Gilbert scored a game-high 20 points, and Ripon Christian won the season finale for basketball, 60-57. The Knights wound up 7-3 in their lone season in the VOL, which includes a 66-62 overtime upset of reigning league champion Central Catholic. Gilbert fired a single-game, varsity career-high 28 points. He averaged 16.4 points for his senior season.

Ripon Christian is 9-9 (10-9 overall) for baseball and will have a bonus home-and-away series with Sierra next week. Gilbert pitched a five-inning one-hitter this past Monday against Kimball.
