LATHROP — With visiting Los Banos leading by two points after the first quarter, Lathrop rode the hot hand of Camryn Hayes the rest of the way and ran away with a 55-33 Western Athletic conference boys basketball win.
Hays hit seven from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 23 points.
“I’ve had some difficulties with home games,” Hayes said. “But I finally had a good one. The shots just kept going in.
“We struggled in the first quarter but we came back and got it going again.”
Izaias White (six rebounds, four assists, three steals, two blocks) gave the Spartans (6-1 WAC, 9-9 overall) the lead for good with a putback at 12-10 early in the second quarter. He scored six of his 10 points in the second period to lead Lathrop to a 25-17 halftime lead.
“We all did good as a team,” White said. “Everybody was putting their body on the line and hustling, rebounding and scoring.
“Cam (Hayes) is one of the best shooters in the league. He is not going to miss when we need him.”
Jaelin Butler added 10 points and six rebounds for the Spartans. Lathrop won the battle of the boards 34-24 and the Spartans made 10 steals.
The Lathrop win comes on the heels of a disappointing 74-64 loss to Mountain House on Wednesday.
“This felt good, especially after the loss to Mountain House,” Spartans coach Charles Roth said. “To come back and get to the style of play that we play – grind hard, push the tempo, inside out – that gets us to our outside game with inside play too.
“It’s just taking care of the ball with the little simple things that we need to do. They had a good 2-3 zone and they would sometimes deflect the ball on the inside.”
Camron Lockett paced the Tigers (2-2, 12-5) with eight points.
Lathrop takes to the road Wednesday at Los Banos to face Pacheco at 8 p.m.
Los Banos 45, Lathrop 41
Quintin Bohoman led the Spartans with 17 points.
Lathrop’s Fardin Kabiri and Nick Wimbush-Parker added eight points each.
