Manteca High’s freshman boys basketball team mounted a 17-6 run in the third quarter en route to beating rival Sierra 48-38 and claiming the Block M Tournament championship Friday.

Sierra, which was undefeated through six games going in, was on top 12-5 after a quarter of play, and 23-21 at halftime.

“Manteca just wanted it more,” Sierra coach Ryan Mitchell said. “They outworked us on rebounds and we didn’t take care of what we were supposed to take care of.”

Marcus Montano paced the Buffaloes with 20 points, and Keyshawn Shackelford pitched in with 13. Hunter Johnson led Sierra with 13 points, while Jakob Gallagher had 10.

The Squires (6-5) nursed a 26-23 lead at halftime before getting outscored 22-13 in the third.

Jordan Perry and Joe Menzel fired 10 points apiece for East Union.

“In the first half we played real well and took care of the ball for the most part, but in the third quarter they really got after us,” East Union coach Jeff Lund said. “They found gaps in our defense and hit a couple big 3-pointers. Foul trouble hurt us, too.”

Tournament host Manteca defeated Sierra in the third-place game.
