STOCKTON — Daniel Whaley and the Lathrop Spartans turned defense into offense Tuesday as they outlasted Franklin 85-66 in non-league play.
The speedy junior guard amassed 28 points, five steals and five assists and was the ignition to Lathrop’s transition game.
Eddie Cotton contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (2-2). C.J. Ward chimed in with eight points, 12 boards, five assists and two blocks. Julian Chavez and Walton Whaley finished with 10 and nine points, respectively.
Franklin’s Nick Dominguez fired 26 points.
Lathrop opens the Modesto City Classic with Lincoln today at Downey High.

Ripon 52, Patterson 40
PATTERSON — With much of their core players still playing football, the Indians (1-0) started the season with just eight active players on the roster.
Kaydon Whiteside helped carry the load with 13 points, and Brayden Haines turned in 11. Ripon led 25-18 at halftime and remained in control the rest of the way.
“I’m proud of the way the guys battled tonight,” Ripon coach Justin Graham said. “They played with great energy and did the good, solid fundamental things that really got us the win tonight. They didn’t do anything flashy, just took care of business.”
