BOYS HOOPS: East Union beats familiar foe in Godinez opener

TURLOCK — The East Union boys basketball team clobbered Grace Davis for the second time in a week on Thursday, cruising to a 57-36 win in first-round action of the 42nd annual Godinez Tournament.
The Lancers face host Turlock tonight at 8:30. Turlock (4-1) trounced Denair, 77-37.
Christian Cuevas and Asiah Scott paced East Union (4-2) with 17 points apiece. The Lancers were well ahead 31-12 by halftime. The two teams previously met in the Modesto City Classic on Nov. 30, with East Union rolling, 63-40.
Rivals Merced and Golden Valley square off in the other winner’s-bracket semifinal tonight at 7.

Argonaut Tournament
Sac. Adventist 58, Ripon Christian 36

JACKSON — It was all Capitals (4-2) in this rematch of the 2017-18 CIF Northern California Division VI championship game.
Ripon Christian (3-3) struggled with perimeter shooting, for the most part — sophomore Will Gilbert did make four 3-pointers for the bulk of his 16 points. No other Knights player finished in double figures.
Sacramento Adventist, meanwhile, got 18 points from sophomore guard Breckin Beaman and 17 from Bryson Collins. The Capitals jumped out to a 17-8 first-quarter lead.

Junior varsity
Beyer 65, Manteca 37

Khalid Robinson scored 11 points for Manteca, while Jake Wirstlin chipped in eight.
Beyer staked a 32-12 halftime lead.
