RIPON — Braden Van Groningen dominated the net Thursday for host Ripon Christian in a 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of Sierra in non-league boys volleyball action.
Van Groningen tallied nine kills, eight blocks and an ace. Cade Alger added eight kills, two blocks, two aces; Jacob Van Groningen had five kills and a block; Michael Kamps made eight assists and Lucas Van Groningen tallied nine assists, three kills and three aces to round out the attack for the Knights (5-2).
“Our team played really well,” Ripon Christian coach Kevin Tameling said. “We have been working on diversifying our offense.
“That starts with our defense. I challenged them and they stepped up and our offense flowed from there.”
Cyrus Hunter posted seven kills for the Timberwolves (5-5). Carson Hibbs made two aces, two kills and two blocks and Noel Ruezga dished out nine assists.
“This is a game we are taking a lot back from,” Sierra coach Jane Schneider said. “They had some big hitters and some big blockers.
“We have a lot to learn and we know that but we are excited for what is to come.”
 
Lathrop 3, Mountain House 0
MOUNTAIN HOUSE — Line them up and mow them down.
The Spartans (4-0 Western Athletic Conference, 13-0 overall) continued their perfect start with a 25-7, 25-4, 25-10 sweep of host Mountain House (1-3, 2-5) in WAC action.
“Tonight was a night when we continued to work on improving our own game and we did not let up,” Lathrop coach Heather Anderson said. “We continued to keep a high level of intensity the whole match, even when we substituted to start the third set.
“It was great that everyone got to play.”
R.J. Carmesis dished out 25 assists and three aces for the Spartans. Tyler Riggleman added 10 kills and six aces, Gabriel Gutierrez made eight kills and ace and Juan Zavala and Adrian Corona posted three kills each.
 
Chavez 3, Manteca 2

STOCKTON — The Buffaloes (1-2) lost the first two sets and won the next two only for the host Titans (5-6) came away with the 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 15-4 non-conference win.
Rovick Hombrebueno had 23 assists for Manteca. Adrian Gonzales added 16 digs and nine kills and A.J. Singh made four blocks.
 
Junior varsity
Lathrop 2, Mountain House 0

MOUNTAIN HOUSE — The Spartans swept the Mustangs 25-15, 25-18.
Arman John led Lathrop with six kills and an ace. Tory Sumbler added 12 assists and three aces and Kyle Constantino added four kills.
