For a school with no seniors, Cosumnes Oaks of Elk Grove already has a girls soccer team to be reckoned with.
The Wolf Pack went 14-5-1 last season, at the varsity level no less, with only freshmen and sophomores and qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Having played them last year and sneaking out with a 2-1 win on the road, Manteca knew what it was up against.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in non-league action Tuesday at Guss Schmiedt Field.
While pleased with the play of his defense and back-up goalkeeper Brittany Costa (six saves), Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg felt the Buffaloes (5-2-1) could have and should have come away victorious.
Starting goalie Jimi Guibor broke a pinkie in the first half of Manteca’s 5-1 victory over Hughson Monday, and she could to be back next week when the Buffaloes open the Valley Oak League season.
“They’re the best team we’ve played in the preseason, but a team we could have beaten,” he said. “They’re good and probably playoff bound again. Hopefully we see them again.”
Manteca outshot the Wolf Pack (0-2) 13-5 and controlled the first 20 minutes of the opening half.
Jessica Reeder had the Buffaloes’ best look of the game during that stretch, but her direct kick from roughly 30 yards out caromed harmlessly off the crossbar.
“We looked really good in the first 20 minutes, and almost half of our shots all game came in the first 10-12 minutes,” Coenenberg said. “We just got in the habit in our last two games of relying on our speed. They’re a very fast team that can match us speed-wise, and that gave us some problems.”
Manteca wraps up its non-league schedule with another tough match against Lincoln of Stockton at home today.
“We did not play as a team today, and to compete in our league we need to get better at playing as a team,” Weston Ranch coach Carlos Gaspar said. “It was just a bad day. I know these girls are better than what they showed, but we need to step up our game.”
