With Tuesday night’s non-league boys dual wrestling match between visiting Manteca and Lathrop long since decided, the final bout at 285 pounds was between Lathrop’s Casyn Hopping and Manteca’s Josiah Sagapolu.
Hopping led 5-1 in the second period before Sagapolu got the upper hand and the pin, making the final score Manteca 56, Lathrop 14.
“I felt him a little high on me,” Sagapolu said. “(Coach Vince) Bordi and them were telling me to swim, so I did and I caught him in a bear hug and I just held him right there.
“Once I got the bear hug, I knew I had him because very few people get out of that once I do it.”
Other pins for the Buffaloes were Caleb Kopp (120), Daniel Solorio (132), Angel Resendiz (150), Luis Rosas (165), Dennen Loureiro (175), Rohan Karthik (190) and Ryder Vasquez (215). Chris Ocemeria (144) notched a technical fall and Brandon Nakham (126) posted a decision.
“I was trying to be loose,” Karthik said. “I am at least 20 pounds lighter than him so I had to be fast and quick.
“In the first round I cradled him but in the second round I got him.”
Dan Narvaez (113) started the night off on the right foot for the Spartans with a pin, but after that the Lathrop wins were few and far between. Adrian Howard (138) added a pin and Damian Ceja-Ramirez (157) edged his friend Rudra Singh 11-9.
“It was a tough match,” Ceja-Ramirez said. “He and I are friends.
“It was a dogfight, but in the end it was all about conditioning and who wanted it more. I wanted it more.”
The Lathrop girls defeated Manteca 27-12.
Angelina Sheel-Roblero (120), Kimberly Salazar (145) and Anaya Gonzales (170) posted pins for the Spartans and Kiana Quintero (125) notched a technical fall.
“I was able to get a tech today,” Quintero said. “I was just trying to take my shots.”
Elsie Wanjiru (155) and Liliana Rios (235) tallied wins for the Buffaloes via pin.
“I felt pretty good today,” Rios said. “Our team wasn’t doing so well and I wanted to get us at least one more win.
“I wrestled her (Laila Hill) last week at Goddess of War and won by a point, so I knew I could beat her.”
