The Manteca High boys tennis team came out of the California High School Classic with just one win in five matches.

Buffalo head coach Frank Fontana believes the squad came away with much more.

Manteca wrapped up the tournament Saturday with losses to Oakland powerhouse Head Royce and Bella Vista of Fair Oaks, falling by scores of 0-6 and 2-4, respectively.

“We finished the tournament 1-4 playing against really good competition, which is really going to prepare us for the Valley Oak League,” Fontana said. “Our guys are more determined to compete at that next level. They got to compete against private schools and schools larger than our own.”

Fontana added that the team’s strength of depth was taken away under the tournament’s six-match format, “but our guys still held their own.”

The all-freshman doubles team of Mike Lopez and Yok Jing Na was the top performers for the Buffaloes. They lost in the third set of the most competitive match in the shutout loss to Head Royce and bounced back to win 6-2, 6-0 against Bella Vista.

Also winning against Bella Vista were No. 3 doubles partners Jorge Sierra and Angel Tejada, 6-4, 6-4.

Manteca opens VOL action today at Oakdale.
