Buffs blank Franklin in final tune-up for league

Manteca did all of its damage in the first half but continued to take a beating in the second.

In the final match of their preleague schedule, the Buffaloes overcame the physical play of visiting Franklin of Stockton in Tuesday’s 3-0 win. Standout striker Sammie Morris sat out with a sore groin, and it was probably a good thing with the Valley Oak League season opening Thursday at undefeated Kimball.

“Our last few games have been physical,” said Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg. “From what it sounds like, it’s going to be another competitive year for VOL girls soccer. Every game is going to be a battle, so we have to be ready for that.”

He said the girls didn’t mind as they prepare for what is expected to be a rigorous run through the VOL gauntlet. Freshman Leah Manuleleua, Katie Locke and Sialei Manuleleua netted Manteca’s goals in that order. Chenayi Tavaziva hooked up with Leah Manuleleua on a corner kick, and Locke finished off a pass from Anna Arriola.

Manteca (8-2) outshot the Yellowjackets 16-8, and goalies McKenna Balmut and Kianna Bristow combined for three saves.
