MODESTO – After battling through a scoreless first half Monday on a sloppy field Manteca broke through for a goal in the 48th minute and then held on for a 1-0 Valley Oak League girls soccer win over Central Catholic of Modesto.

“The field was pretty sloppy,” Buffaloes coach Justin Coenenberg said. “The field did not absorb water very well and the sand that was put on it just made things slippery.”

In the 48th minute Manteca (4-1 VOL, 12-4 overall) got on the board. Kaley Miller got a through ball to Kaitlynn Funsch who blasted a shot off of the post. Jordan Silva was in the right spot to get the rebound and power the ball back into the net for the game’s only score.

“We did a pretty good job of managing the game with a 1-0 lead,” Coenenberg said. “Mia Watson and Carolyn Morrish played well in the back line.”

The Buffaloes had 16 shots on goal and the Raiders (2-3, 10-7-1) had 15. Manteca goalie Aimee Meier tallied 13 saves.
