The Manteca Buffaloes are trying to get better as a team, and for them that means competing in one of the state’s most competitive tournaments in the California High School Tennis Classic.

The Buffaloes opened play in the 120-team tournament, competing in team format with three singles and three doubles matches. The two-day tournament will feature teams from every section in the entire state, and some 1,600 players competing throughout the Clovis-Fresno area.

“We are a young team and this is just a good experience for them to see how far they need to get to be successful players,” Manteca head coach Frank Fontana said. “Typically, are one’s and two players are not year around club-players like most of these programs.

“For us it’s about experience and playing quality competition.”

The Buffaloes finished the opening day of tournament action 1-2, stopping DeLesalle 4-2, before dropping matches to Liberty of Bakersfield (0-6) and Rocklin (2-4).

In the win over De Lasalle, Oral Nunis won 6-1, 6-3 and teammate Mike Lopez edged out his opponent 7-6, 6-3. Yok Jing Ma handled Manteca’s third spot, winning 6-4, 6-4 in his action. Manteca’s doubles tandem of Jacob Webb and Jorge Sierra were also impressive, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Manteca will continue tournament action at 10 a.m.
