Buffs open with loss to MMC champ

MODESTO — Defending Valley Oak League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Manteca began its 2017 season with a good first test Tuesday in Gregori, the reigning Modesto Metro Conference titlist.
The Buffaloes dropped a 6-3 decision to the Division I school.
They got two of their team points in singles play. No. 3 Taylor Corona defeated Lauren Martin 6-1, 7-5, while No. 6 Makenna Condit held off Abigail Sebastian, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Ravneed Dhillon and Navina Mann toppled Gregori’s Morgan Arakelian and Kaajal Khanna, 6-3, 6-0.
Gregori dominated at the top of the singles ladder. Carmen Fallon shut out Manteca’s Julia Tang 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 match. At No. 2 singles, Sasha Origel beat Koryn Menasco 0-6, 1-6. Sahiba Kaur (2-6, 4-6) and Stephanie Mercado (1-6, 0-6) were also swept.
Manteca was competitive in the other doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Julianne Eavenson and Noeli Mercado were edged out 6-3. 3-6, 7-10 by Alyssa Humeston and Julia Rodig. Kaleah Johannson and Melissa Poncini also fell in three sets against Nanki Deol and Jenna Carriegan.
