Manteca returned to its winning ways Thursday when it dispatched visiting Sierra, 6-3.
The victory came one day after the Buffaloes (8-2) lost to Central Catholic for the second time in a battle for first place.
Sierra (5-6) got two of its points from the Banks sisters. Annie Banks knocked off Elizabeth Tolbert 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while No. 3 Claire Banks defeated Julia Saling 6-4, 6-2. Katarina Malabanan and Monique Angel, Sierra’s top doubles team, beat Koryn Menasco and Stefania Mercado 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
In the No. 2 singles match, Manteca’s Sealy McAdams topped Simran Thind 6-2, 6-4. The Buffaloes dominated the rest of the matches, winning 60 of 72 games. Fechi Nkwocha (6-0, 6-1), Katie Inderbitzin (6-3, 6-1) and Lejla Pepic (6-3, 6-0) swept their matches.
Freshmen Rubel Dehal and Gladis Sandoval claimed the second doubles match, 6-1, 6-2. Haylee Both and Taylor Corona rolled 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Oakdale 5, East Union 4
The Lancers (5-5) nearly pulled off the upset against one of the VOL’s top three teams. They won four of the six singles matches but were swept at doubles.
East Union No. 2 Araceli Gonzales held off Danika Brow, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Mandi Roberts also prevailed in a three-set match, coming back to beat Oakdale No. 5 Danielle Conway, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Jenna Zuniga (6-2, 6-2) and Alexis Phillips (6-3, 6-3) also picked up points for the Lancers.
Oakdale ended up getting the clincher at No. 4 singles, where Katie Schultz defeated Deanna Baker, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.
