It’s official: Manteca High’s football team will open its 2014 season Aug. 29 at Levi’s Stadium.

After months of speculation, the San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday in a press release that this special two-game event, dubbed “Friday Night Lights,” will go on. It’s the fourth event that will be hosted at the 49ers’ brand new billion-dollar facility in Santa Clara, following an MLS match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders FC on Aug. 2 and two 49ers preseason games.

Manteca kicks off the doubleheader against hometown favorite Wilcox at 4:30 p.m. National power De La Salle (Concord) then takes on Jesuit (Carmichael) starting at 8. The nightcap will be televised by ESPN2 and WatchESPN. General admission tickets cost $20, and $5 for students and children ages 18-under. Tickets can be ordered in advance at www.ticketmaster.com

“Levi’s Stadium was designed to showcase the best football at every level and we are thrilled to welcome these four accomplished programs to participate in what we expect to be an annual event,” Julio Fuentes, Executive Director of the Santa Clara Stadium Authority, said in the statement. “Friday night prep football is a celebrated tradition here in Santa Clara and we look forward to giving these young football players the opportunity to play on the same field as the pros.”

Wilcox visited Manteca last fall and snuck away with a thrilling 28-27 overtime victory.

Both senior-heavy teams went on to have successful seasons. Wilcox (9-2) earned a share of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League — De Anza Division championship and was invited to the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. Meanwhile, Manteca (13-2) captured Valley Oak League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division III titles and earned a spot in the CIF State Division II State Regional Bowl Game.
