It took two innings for Ripon High’s softball to get into the swing of things in its season opener at Lathrop Monday.

The Indians snapped out of their funk by plating three runs in the third, and they later amassed seven in the seventh in a 16-2 victory.

Tiana Chacon led Ripon’s onslaught with a 3-for-4 effort that included two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. Ripon rapped 17 total hits. Brianna Gall was also 3 for 4 for the Indians. Nicole Kaiser (2 doubles), Danielle Sperry and Shayla Da Rosa were each 2 for 4.

MacKenzie Gauden threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 13 while giving up an unearned run in the fifth inning on Kristina Torres’ RBI fielder’s choice. Desiree Mendola clubbed a run-double in the sixth.

Castro tossed four hitless innings and was 2 for 2 with a walk from the plate. Brandi logged two innings in relief. Jillian Costa was 1 for 1 with two walks and two runs. Tea Solorio contributed a double for the Lancers (2-0).

Weston Ranch 4, Chavez 3

Pitcher Arianna Hernandez (six strikeouts) and the Cougars (2-0) held off Chavez’s late comeback charge in Saturday’s nonleague contest.

Weston Ranch led 4-0 by the fourth inning, but Chavez chipped away with three runs over the final two frames. Lydia McDonald drove in a pair of runs to lead the offense, and Hernandez finished 2 for 2.
