STOCKTON – Manteca eked out a first-set victory Tuesday before host Chavez-Stockton took the next three in a 24-26, 25-23, 25-11, 25-22 non-league volleyball win.

“This was definitely not one of our better ones,” Manteca coach Kevin Bolding said. “It is good to get the non-conference stuff over with and move on to league.

“Sometimes you have things that don’t go your way. You learn from it and move on to the next one.”

After the Buffaloes (2-2) trailed 6-1 in the first set they battled back within 24-22 before three kills – two by Tawny Deerinck and one by Destanie Elliott – put Manteca ahead 25-24. An ace by Kaitlyn Morenzone gave the Buffaloes their only win of the night.

“We started out kind of weak at the beginning of the games,” Deerinck said. “We got behind and it was kind of tough to catch up in all but the first one. We started fighting back toward the end but it was too late by then.”

Deerinck had 12 digs and eight kills to lead Manteca. Melissa Hansen added 15 digs, Morgan Miramontes and Taylor Bays nine digs apiece, Aryana Martinez and Payton  Reis six kills each and Morenzone five kills.
