Colyn scores twice as RC records first league victory

Ripon Christian’s girls soccer team picked up a much-needed 4-2 win at Le Grand Thursday.

It was the first Southern League win of the season for the Knights (1-1-1, 6-4-1 overall), who opened the conference season with a one-goal loss to reigning champion Mariposa and a 1-1 tie against contending Waterford.

In just her second match coming off the basketball season, Kaylie Colyn netted two goals to lead Ripon Christian. Adri Van Groningen struck for the game’s first score in the third minute and later added an assist.

Vanessa Vallo contributed with a goal, and Natalie Prins tallied an assist. Goalie Brittany Petlansky picked up three saves.

Erica Urquiza and Erica Buitron scored for Le Grand.

Golf

Ripon 214, Modesto Ch.263

Zach Capel shared medalist honors with a 3-over 38 to lead the Indians (3-2 Trans-Valley League, 4-4 overall) to victory at Spring Creek Country Club. Modesto Christian’s Kyle Intorf also shot a 38.

Kyle Head checked in with a 41 for Ripon. He reached the par-five eighth hole in two and two-putted for a birdie.

Jack Brierly and Jason Williamson each scored a 44, and Cole Bagdasarian added a 47.

Ripon will next face rival Ripon Christian next Wednesday for a tentatively-rescheduled nonleague match. The Indians return to TVL action March 26 with the conference’s midseason tournament at Antioch’s Roddy Ranch Golf Course.
