Cougars beat Central Catholic

It took five sets but host Weston Ranch handed Central Catholic-Modesto its first Valley Oak League loss Thursday in thrilling fashion, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 17-15. 

Amaya Finley had 26 kills for the Cougars (2-1 VOL, 7-6). Jennifer Viguerias added 34 assists, Iris Murphy 19 digs, Amaya Finley five aces and Cassandra Alcazar three blocks.

The Raiders drop to 2-1, 7-6. 

 

Kimball 3,

East Union 0

 The Lancers (1-2, 5-5) made it close in third set but were swept 20-25, 16-25

23-25.

“We were not a very good passing team tonight and had a lot of unforced errors,” East Union coach Rich Posz said. “We just have up too many easy points to them.”

Melissa King had 11 assists 3 kills for East Union.  Mariah Jeffrey had 5 kills and three blocks, Amy Gann six digs and Alissa Burrola five kills.

 

Lathrop 3, Sierra 0

The visiting Spartans (1-2, 4-4) picked up their first league win with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 sweep of the Timberwolves (0-3, 3-7).

Megan Westfall had 12 assists for Sierra. Vanessa Benham had eight aces, five kills and three blocks Carolina Ortega five kills.

 

Southern League

Ripon Christian 3, Mariposa 1

Paige Vos was on fire for the Knights in a 25-13, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 win over the visiting Grizzlies (2-2, 2-5). 

Vos just missed a double-double with 20 kills and nine digs. Bailey Silveira added 11 digs, Bethany Silveira 10 and Beth Weststey had 22 assists. 

Carly Eastham had three consecutive aces and finished with four.

 “We played well,” Ripon Christian coach Tiger Shelton said. “We are 3-0 in league after a rough start and it looks like we might be figuring some stuff out.

“We are a young team but getting better every day.” 

 

Sophomores

Sierra 2, Lathrop 1

The Timberwolves split the first two sets but won the third 25-9, 16-25, 15-7. 

Kylie Matteroli had six digs for Sierra and Hailey Steele had six aces.

 

Central Catholic 2,

Weston Ranch 0

After a close first set the Cougars (0-3, 2-6) were swept 25-23, 25-11. 

 

Freshmen

Lathrop 2, Sierra 1

The Timberwolves lost in three 22-25, 25-18, 11-15.

Kyanna Bingham had 14 service points with nine aces for Sierra and Dolce Cruz had two kills.

Weston Ranch 2, Central Catholic 1

The Cougars (2-1, 7-1) won in thrilling fashion 25-10, 9-25,15-13.
