ELK GROVE – Weston Ranch travelled north to Rosemont High Saturday afternoon for the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals Tournament and was turned away after one match, falling to Placer, 39-19.

Cougars co-head coach Pat King was pleased with a few performances, but overall said the day was a disappointment for a team that had excelled in duals throughout the season.

Travis Bowen got the match off to a good start, collecting a 9-0 win at 140 pounds, but the Cougars dropped their next four, including beats of Joseph Harai (145 pounds), Sam Saini (152) and Ramon Cortez (171).

The momentum picked up with a pin from Chris Contreras at 189, a 7-3 win from Franschot Sibley at 215, and a pin from Eddie Reed at heavyweight.

Daniel Guzman, however, was beaten at 103 pounds, and Chris Rodriguez fell at 112.

Grant Mar wrestled well at 119 pounds, managing a 15-8 loss to an outstanding wrestler that downed Mar easily a year ago, but Daniel Garcia (130) fell in overtime and newcomer JoeAnthony Gomez was pinned at 135 pounds.

“We have a good group of young wrestlers, and they wrestled well,” King said. “But we have three seniors that all lost. That’s the fact of the matter. We stunk it up. We didn’t wrestle the way we should have.

“To go and represent the (Valley Oak League) and not to perform the way we can is disappointing.”

The Cougars will travel 10 or 11 wrestlers to Saturday’s VOL tournament at Central Valley High.

“We have to regroup,” King said. “A couple of the JV kids will move back down, and we’ll see how it goes.”
