The Weston Ranch Cougars did not waste any time getting things going against McNair High, handling the Eagles in mercy-rule fashion in a season-opening 11-1 win Friday.

Arianna Hernandez and Miranda Holmes both went 2-for-4 with a double for the Cougars. Hernandez also banged out a triple and handled the circle for Weston Ranch (1-0), going six innings and striking out six while walking just one.

Jaime Bowen was 3-for-3 with a double.

Lathrop 8, Pacheco 7

The Spartans used a late-inning rally to break a 7-7 tie, beating Pacheco High in their final at bat in a 8-7 win Friday.

Lathrop surrendered two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, allowing Pacheco to sneak back into the contest. Lathrop would push across the winning run on a wild pitch, ending the ball game.

Alicia Erlandson pitched five innings for Lathrop (1-0), giving up six hits and a pair of earned runs. Janel Butler had a hit and scored a run in the win, and freshman Desiree Mendola collected a hit and RBI in her varsity debut.

“I was very pleased with our offense,” Lathrop head coach Christina Jones said. “We have been emphasizing the mental aspect of the game this year and my girls performed as expected.”
