Very little has changed throughout an illustrious Valley Oak League run for the Weston Ranch Cougars, and the theme continued in a 5-0 VOL win over the Manteca Buffaloes Tuesday at Weston Ranch.
The Cougars (13-0) continued to take care of its agenda, winning all three singles match and only dropping one set along the way. The Cougars’ doubles teams were as impressive, beating the Buffaloes in straight sets with both groups.
“What I love most about my team is their ability to play their best tennis each and every match,” Cougars head coach Jason Furtado said. “It can be exhausting mentally to be your best for an entire season, and somehow we have been able to do just that.
“I am beyond proud of this team.”
Ly Hoang and Cristina Poklay beat Manteca’s No. 1 doubles team 6-4, 6-2, while Nancy Nyguen and Chelsea Olitan teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 win. Both Vy Hoang and Areolle Albino won in straight sets, and Nicole Bowen rebounded from a 4-6 loss to close things out 6-1, 6-4 for the win.
The Cougars will try and remain perfect when they make the trip to Oakdale Thursday to take on the Mustangs. Manteca will travel to Sonora on Thursday.
The Lancers cruised to wins in singles play with Rebekah Jacobson (6-2, 6-0) and Michelle Pintos (6-0, 6-2) winning with ease. No. 1 doubles tandem Klasey Kachalkiin and Shalane Jackson won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while East Union’s No. 2 doubles team garnered an easy 6-1, 6-1 win.
Alegado was the Spartans’ lone bright spot, posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory for Lathrop’s first VOL points of the season.
“Merchelle Alegado came back after being down 3-0 in the first set,” Lathrop head coach Anthony Sadorra said. “She rallied back to win the first set 6-4 and took that momentum into the second set finishing the day with a 6-2 victory.
“All the Lathrop girls were able to put up some games on the scorecards today.”
The Spartans will look for continued improvement Thursday when they take on Kimball, while East Union will try and post another victory over the Sierra Timberwolves.
