STOCKTON – Weston Ranch finished the day 3-2 Saturday and brought home the Division 3 first-place trophy in its own Cougar Duals.

“Any time you can get the kids five matches in a day it is a great day,” Weston Ranch coach and tournament director Pat King said. “The matches were very competitive and the two that we lost came down to the last match and could have gone either way.

“We graduated 24 kids last year and had six wrestle in the novice tournament last weekend. So we are young, and it seemed like every match they went out there they wrestled better.”

Daniel Garcia (152 pounds) went 5-0 for the Cougars with three pins. Teammates Daniel Guzman (112) and Sterling Owens (285) were also undefeated.

“This was a different weight for me,” Garcia said. “Last week I did 145 and I was close to 146 this morning. I just tried my best and tried to get after it.”

Manteca and Weston Ranch met for the Division 3 trophy with each having defeated Lodi in the seeded competition and the Cougars won 51-27.

“This was our first varsity competition of the season,” Buffaloes coach John Vasquez said. “And it went well. It was a very good level of competition we went up against.”

Mario Hernandez (119) went 4-0 with three pins for Manteca and Charlie Alvitre (112) did not lose until his match with Weston Ranch.

“It was a good experience and it was fun,” Hernandez said.

The seeding for the championship rounds are determined by the pool results, and Lathrop made it into Division 2 with a 2-1 pool record defeating Argonaut 61-18 and Lodi 46-21 but losing to eventual Division 1 champion Golden Valley 72-0.

After being seeded in Division 2, Lathrop defeated Buhach Colony 47-20 but was edged for the trophy 39-36 by Center.

“Our goal going into this was to finish in the top five,” Spartans coach Dimos Birakos said. “And sure enough we went 3-2 and took fifth overall.

“It came down to the match with Center and they wrestled us tough. It came down to a questionable call and they ended up walking away with our trophy.”

Andrew Aquino (125) was 3-1 for Lathrop with all three wins by pin and his only loss was to Golden Valley.

“I think we did all right for the first time at this tournament,” Aquino said. “The hard part about this tournament was Golden Valley. They are a pretty tough team.”

Weston Ranch and Manteca qualified for Division 3 with Weston Ranch defeating Johansen 54-27 before being edged by Center 39-36 and defeated by Franklin 42-30. Manteca defeated Tracy 69-6 in pool action before losing to Buhach Colony 53-28 and Union Mine 49-27.
