CROSS COUNTRY: Lathrop’s Gier sets new 5k school record at Duyst Invitational

Riley Gier paced area harriers at the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State this past Saturday at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres.

The Lathrop High senior set a new school record for a 5-kilometer race, finishing in 16 minutes, 52.2 seconds for eighth place. East Union, Ripon and Ripon Christian joined the Spartans in the small-school division.

Ripon took fourth in varsity boys with 143 points and was followed by Lathrop (eighth, 244), East Union (13th, 391) and Ripon Christian (15th, 404) in the 21-team field. Oakdale won the small-schools title with 44 points.

Ripon was led by senior Miguel Acosta-Pearson (16th, 17:25). All five of the Indians’ scorers placed in the top 50. Lucas De Vera (22nd, 17:45.3), Moses Gomez (28th, 18:00.3), Matteo De Vera (38th, 18:31.4) and Landen Morse (39th, 18:31.7) were their other scoring contributors.

Caleb Montiel took 34th (18:11.8) for Lathrop, Elijah Galvan led East Union in 43rd (18:38.2) and Ripon Christian’s Matijs Zylstra was 53rd (19:08.9).

Ripon sophomore Sophia Jung was the top performer from the area in the varsity girls small-schools division. She placed 23rd in 21:12.5.

St. Francis topped the 15-team standings with 36 points. Lathrop took ninth (226), Ripon 13th and Ripon Christian 14th.

Jacquelyn Pena Santillan spearheaded Lathop in 31st place (21:54.5). Mackenzie Collins was close behind in 36th (22:08.9), and Morgan Emery took 42nd (22:35.7).

In lower levels, Alysia Sinclair (8:09.9) of East Union took seventh in the 2k JV girls division.

 

Baylands Invitational

Sierra senior Christian Gonzalez placed third in 12 minutes, 18.14 seconds in the 4,000-meter senior boys division Saturday in Sunnyvale.

He led the Timberwolves to a seventh-place finish out of 15 teams.

Anna Dittman highlighted Sierra’s girls, finishing as runner-up in the sophomore race. She clocked in at 14:42.18.

Monse Saavedra paced Sierra in the senior girls race, taking 10th in 16:08.11.
