Cuneo, Squires deny Manteca in Block M semifinal

Clay Cuneo’s blocked shot at the buzzer secured the East Union sophomore boys basketball team’s 40-39 victory over rival Manteca in the semifinal round of the Block M Tournament Thursday.

The lead changed hands on five occasions over the final three minutes.

Manteca’s Miguel Lopez led all players with 14 points, while Andrew Ruiz fired 13 for East Union. Jordan Perry added nine for the winning team, which encounters Edison of Stockton in tonight’s championship game.

Manteca and Sierra will clash for third place.

Freshman boys

Sierra 44, Kimball 42

The Timberwolves (7-0) trailed for most of the game but got key stops in the fourth quarter to pull ahead.

Three players did most of the damage offensively, with Hunter Johnson pouring in 11 points with 10 apiece coming from Jakob Gallagher and Josh Patton.

Sierra faces Block M Tournament host Manteca for the championship.

Sophomore girls

St. Mary’s 104, Weston Ranch 56

Weston Ranch met its match in the West Coast Jamboree. The Cougars trailed 48-30 and was ultimately done in by 46 turnovers.

Brianna White recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Vanessa Contreras contributed 14 and 11.

With St. Mary’s shoring up the Silver Division’s title, Weston Ranch and Lincoln will square off for second place.
