Danhoff scores 30 as EU beats Armijo for tourney title

Coach Brett Lewis felt that his East Union boys basketball team wasn’t at its best in last week’s three-day Gene Honk Williams Memorial Tournament hosted by Vacaville High.

Perhaps that’s a good sign.

In the championship game Saturday, the Lancers got 30 points and 15 rebounds from center Jacob Danhoff in a 74-68 win over Armijo. It was the second time in five days that East Union (5-0) handed an undefeated team its first loss. Last Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Lancers beat then 5-0 Riverbank, 60-47.

“It was a huge victory for us,” Lewis said. “The guys really battled. We thought that we didn’t play good basketball, but we kept chipping away and won some games.”

Danhoff, the tournament’s MVP, was instrumental in EU’s 26-point outburst in the fourth quarter, accounting for 14 of those points. Armijo (6-1) drilled four 3-pointers in the period to stay within reach.

All-tournament selection Justin Nieto contributed 11 of his 17 points in the first half and provided some much-needed energy. Robbie Gloeckler added seven points and seven rebounds, and Jordan Kron finished with eight points.

East Union returns home tonight for a nonleague battle with Valley.
