Defense keys Knights semifinal win at Oakdale

OAKDALE — Ripon Christian’s boys basketball team is finding different ways to win, and the Knights are on their way to the 48th annual Oakdale Rotary Classic championship game.

They held an opponent to less than 40 points for a third straight game and relied on patience and perimeter shooting to get past tourney host 54-39 on Thursday.

Andrew Vander Weide commanded the post and scored 18 points, but it was Fletcher Jackson’s four 3-pointers and 16 points that helped Ripon Christian (8-4) get over the hump.

“It was kind of a slow-paced game and it turned into a half-court offense,” Ripon Christian coach Mark Hofman said. “With Fletcher hitting those 3-pointers, it loosened (Oakdale’s defense) up for Andrew to do his thing. He gave us that balance.”

Drew Legan led the Mustangs (3-7) with 18 points. Ripon Christian squares off with Pitman (11-3) for the title today starting at 8.
