DeLeon scores 22 in Cougars win over Laguna

COSUMNES OAKS — The Weston Ranch High sophomore boys basketball team claimed third place Saturday at the Cosumnes Oaks Tournament with a 62-55 win over Laguna.
All Tournament selection Divante DeLeon led the way with 22 points and Jesus Fuentes had 12.
Both Tau Cavil and Lorenzo Simmons had nine.
Lexus Thurman scored four, but was pivotal for the Cougars as he shut down Laguna’s best player on the defensive end.
Weston Ranch enjoyed a15-point lead with three minutes to play.
“After our last game (an 89-74 loss to Burbank Friday night), I called out the defense and challenged them to step up their play,” Cougars head coach Eddie Menzel said. “Our goal was to hold (Laguna) to under 12 in every quarter. We got it done for the three quarters.
“The kids answered the call, I was very pleased, it was a big improvement.”
Weston Ranch (4-5 overall) travels to Franklin Dec. 30.

Sierra 54, Beyer 45 (Friday)
Eddie Andrade led the T’Wolves with 16 points, and Grant Widmer added 13 as the T’Wolves ran past the Patriots.
Jerod Patton had 12 and Mike Leland netted six.
“It was a quality win for us,” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “We did a good job of working the ball inside to our bigs.
“Edy Guzman only scored three points but he did an incredible job of running the offense at the point.
“I am proud of the way the team responded after the tough loss to Ripon on Wednesday.”
The T’Wolves host Modesto Tuesday.

Manteca 54, Tokay 42 (Friday)
The Buffaloes moved to 5-2 overall behind Eric Godfrey’s 12.
Both Josh Walters and C.J. Rivas netted 10.
“It was a good team effort,” Buffs head coach Jimmy Perez said.
Manteca kicks off the Block M Tournament Saturday.
