ANGELS CAMP — The East Union boys won the Division III Sub-Section boys championship Saturday, while the Ripon girls were second in Division IV on the 3-mile course at Frogtown.
“It was a good finish for us,” Lancers coach Rick Cuevas said. “I told the kids to go only about 90 percent, just enough to qualify.
“We were shocked to get first place.”
Johnny Sandoval finished fourth (16 minutes, 43.0 seconds) for the Lancers to lead the East Union contingent of Marco Perez (11th, 16:58.5), Maury Ortiz (14th, 17:09.2), Cooper Freeman (20th, 17:14.1) and Alex Cuevas (21st, 17:18.2).
The Sierra boys finished ninth, and as a result of finishing in the top 10 will advance to the Section Finals this Saturday in Folsom. Axel Rios was the top Timberwolves runner, finishing 18th (17:11.09).
The top 10 individuals also qualify and although the Ripon boys were 11th in Division IV, Abrahim Alsaidi finished ninth (16:44.5) for the Indians.
Laila Irogoyen led the Ripon girls with a fifth-place finish (20.18.1) and in Division V Girls Ripon Christian’s Elle Van Wyngarden was ninth (22:42.1).
In the lower-level competition on a 2-mile course, East Union’s April Duarte was first (14:47.6) in Division III frosh/soph girls. In frosh/soph Division IV girls, Lathrop’s Tamaine Lowery finished second (14:32.2) and Ripon finished fifth as a team and was led by Jeily Reynoso (fifth, 15:01.7).
East Union’s Antonio Zavala was sixth (12:20.5) and Devin Peterson seventh (12:31.5) in Freshman Boys Division III; the Ripon boys were fourth in freshman boys Division IV with Lucas Waibel finishing 11th (13:05.1).
