STOCKTON — Cold shooting in the fourth period contributed to the East Union High boys varsity basketball team’s 77-62 loss Tuesday to Freedom.

In the 5th Annual Bruin Shootout at Bear Creek High, the Lancers played aggressively on both ends of the court, forcing numerous turnovers off their pressure defense in the second half.

“The press was good for us,” said East Union coach Brett Lewis.

His team returned the favor by giving the ball back to Freedom. The Falcons capitalized on several of those opportunities.

They slowly pulled away in the fourth, getti   ng a boost from Darrell Greene, who used his rugged 6-foot-4 frame to take control of the boards. Twice, he scored on second-chance baskets.

Freedom (5-5) of the Bay Valley Athletic League was rebounding from a tourney-opening loss to McNair. East Union (5-5) was beaten by Pleasant Grove on the previous day.

“We played much better today,” said Lewis. “It was a much better effort on our part. We just couldn’t get the defensive stops when needed. Nor could we (consistently) get our shots to fall.”

The Lancers fell behind in the opening quarter, 19-13, but the closed the gap shortly before the intermission.

Down 35-32 at the intermission, East Union continued to keep it close through most of the second half. TeeJay Gordon, who scored nine of his 15 points in the third period, had a steal leading to quick basket. The bench also contributed, with Wayne Cheung and Terrance Williams finding their shots.

Sophomore Jordan Kron had a game-high 26 points, delivering on a pair of 3-point baskets including one right before the buzzer.

East Union entered the fourth trailing 57-56, but fell further behind as Freedom reeled off seven unanswered points.

The Lancers went ice cold from the field.

They finally broke the scoring draught near the final three minutes of the game on Kron’s trey. His other 3-point bomb in the waning minute accounted for East Union’s offensive input in the quarter.

Offensively, Freedom relied on a balanced attack consisting of Andrew Garner (18), Ramiro Contreras (16) and Jeff Matteri (14).

East Union will play the loser of the game between Stagg and Tracy — the Bulldogs came in as a late replacement, filling the void left by Berkeley opting out of the eight-team field — today at 3 o’clock.
