The East Union Lancers once again relied on sharp-shooting and solid defense to take a step further in the Modesto City Classic Friday night by downing Los Banos 56-45 and secure their second victory of the season.
With the win, East Union (2-1) will play in the consolation championship at Johansen High School today at 2 p.m.
Friday’s win marked the second straight game that the Lancers improved from their 83-34 loss to Bullard High of Fresno in the opening round of the tournament. East Union head coach Brett Lewis credits that experience as giving his team the motivation needed to rise to the occasion.
“I don’t think anybody on our team, especially the juniors, have ever been beaten that badly,” Lewis said of the first game. “That really fired them up, and it showed in the game tonight. It woke us up, and tonight we saw a great effort from a lot of our guys.”
Robert Vaughn led the Lancers in scoring with 23 points, draining five shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Brandon Cline continued his assault from downtown with five 3-pointers to extend his hot streak after nailing six on Thursday night.
The Buffaloes went into the locker room at halftime with a 33-21 lead, but the combination of missed shots and turnovers gave the Knights a chance to claw back into the game and ultimately take the lead in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
“The basket went cold and we just turned the ball over too much,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “I was happy with the way we were executing offensively to start, but we couldn’t do it in the second half.”
EJ Godrey, who celebrated his birthday Friday, led the Buffaloes in scoring with 27 points.
Manteca plays again today at 3:30 at Johansen High school against the loser of the Grace Davis-Enochs game for seventh place.
The Timberwolves (0-2) held a comfortable 13-point lead at the half and were still up by eight heading into the fourth quarter.
Will Ward led Sierra in scoring with 16 points.
The Timberwolves will play again today in Elk Grove at 11 a.m. in the seventh-place game.
Nick Obazuaye produced 18 points and 17 rebounds, while Miguel Lopez made 9-of-10 free throws and fired in 23 points. Austin Haro contributed 11 points and six boards.
Buhach’s Steven Chance amassed 33 points to lead all scorers.
