East Union grinds out close road win

CERES — What started out as an offensive onslaught turned out to be a defensive struggle for the remainder of the contest, and East Union High’s sophomore girls basketball team was able to squeak out with a 37-36 win at Central Valley.

The Squires (10-4 Valley Oak League, 15-9 overall) led 17-14 after the first quarter but trailed by one in each of the next two periods, 24-23 and 29-28.

Klasey Kachalkin and Kristen Piasecki fired in 11 points apiece for East Union.

CERES — The Pages found themselves down 23-14 at halftime but avoided the upset. Angelique Cardoza sealed the win with the deciding free throw with 17.8 seconds left.
Alex Scopas led the way with 14 points, and Alyssa Gonigan contributed 11.
 
Manteca 47, Sierra 27
Valerie Nester scored eight points to go with 12 rebounds in a losing effort for host Sierra.

Brenda Padilla added five points, nine rebounds and 11 steals; and Kristy Davis finished with four points, four rebounds and two steals.
