Bulletin staff reports
East Union co-head golf coach Dennis Wells has seen plenty of good golf from his star pupil Brooke Riley.
On Thursday, he may have seen her at her best, and she could have been even better in the Lancers’ 216-256 win over Oakdale at Manteca Park Golf Course.
Riley shot 7-under 30 for a new Valley Oak League record on the track’s front nine. Wells also believes it to be a course record for ladies golfers. The Northwestern-bound senior collected seven birdies and two pars but failed to capitalize on makeable putts in her four birdie opportunities.
“That was probably the best she’s ever played, definitely the best I’ve ever seen her hit it,” Wells said. “We let her play the back side just to see how low she could go, and she ended up with a 67 because of a triple (bogey) on 11.”
Oakdale teammates Taylor Stewart and Emily Greenwood finished tied for second with 44s.
The Lancers backed their ace well, with three 47s coming from Chloe Cardenas, Natalie Gowan and Alli Tajii. Brittany Conjin added a 45.
East Union is 7-0 in league, while Oakdale fell to 4-3.
“We are liking what we’re seeing from the rest of the team,” Wells said. “They are being consistent but still wasting a few shots, so there is still a lot of work to do.”
