East Union’s girls basketball team is ready for the Valley Oak League season to come.

Head coach Jim Agostini believes as much after the Lancers capped the Tom Hawkins/Tracy Breakfast Lions Tournament with a 64-22 win over Edison of Stockton in the battle for fifth place Thursday at Tracy High.

East Union outscored the Vikings 19-3 in the third quarter and was up comfortably 58-20 before the running clock was implemented.

The Lancers (8-3) hope to be battle-tested from their recent stretch of brutal games with top teams, including losses to Armijo of Fairfield and tourney champ El Camino of Sacramento.

“We wanted to see how the team would respond in close games, and five out of our 11 (non-league) games were close,” Agostini said. “We were able to evaluate our team and saw some good signs, but we still have to step up our level for league. Defensively, we’re just not there yet.”

Senior guard Briona Fontenot, however, has arrived. She tallied 17 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, further establishing herself as a reliable scoring complement to all-tournament selection Lexy Posz (7 points) and forward Shalane Jackson (14 points).

“Briona really worked hard on her game and has stepped in as that third scorer for us, and that’s helped a lot,” Agostini said.

East Union opens the Valley Oak League season next Tuesday against Lathrop at Dalben Center.

Napa 61, Lathrop 29
The Spartans (2-9) finished the tournament winless and with their eighth straight defeat heading into VOL play.

Napa built a 16-6 lead in the first period behind a stifling press defense, and in the second half Lathrop scored just 11 points. Jasmine Elder led Lathrop with nine points, and Krystal Ruiz and Marissa Elliott both had eight.
